Before reading ahead, have you read my last article about how to write the best statement of purpose essay? No? Click here for some enlightenment!
You've finally set aside some time to start your statement of purpose essay, but you aren't sure where to start.
5 THINGS TO CONSIDER WHEN STARTING
#1 Story of my life
Treat this essay as a narrative for your life and how Japan has influenced it. I spent a day having a conversation with friends and family, where they questioned what was my reason for travelling to Japan. It may seem repetitive after the 5th conversation, it became easier for me to judge what was important to mention in my essay after discussing it with different people.
#2 Brainstorming
Creating a brainstorm from the information discussed previously helps you navigate what sort of tone you'd like to take with your essay. Think about who is potentially reading your essay (Previous JETs, consulate workers, Japanese people) and decide whether your approach is effective enough to leave a lasting impression on them.
#3 Flow like the ocean
This is a story, to ensure that each paragraph ties well into the next. Finding a starting point and ending point is easier said than done, however, this will assist you in the long run, because you can find filler paragraphs that help support your intentions.
#4 Never delete, always store
A good word of advice is actually to save multiple versions of your essay. Keeping track of your overall progress with multiple essays can assist you with carrying the right message across. I wrote a total of two essays before I got to my final conclusion and worked on a third and final one.
#5 Be professional
JET is looking for inspiring individuals that will make a difference in Japan, so be sure to remain professional in your essay. Stay away from emoji's, slang and informal tonality when justifying why you would be the ideal candidate for JET. Be creative, but remember that you are applying for a job at the end of the day!
STRUCTURE FOR YOUR ESSAY
This structure is based off the essay that I submitted to the JET Programme and is also region-specific to JET South Africa. Please feel free to print this structure and make your own notes! Please remember that this is from the perspective of my essay and by no means, guarantees you the same result.
Remember to be original, as there will be a high chance that they will see this too!
